Hey there! On Sunday, May 15th I’ll be walking to raise awareness and funds for an organization and a community that I am involved with and that has a special place in my heart.

This is my first year volunteering for Friendship Circle. The impact that this organization has on children with special needs and their families is truly beautiful. One of my first times volunteering at Sunday Circle, one of the programs in the Friendship Circle, I was paired with a kid who was shy and did not seem very interested in engaging in any activities with me. As he warmed up to me we began playing his own version of TAG, his favorite game, and found ways to keep it interesting throughout the two hours of Sunday Circle; we combined TAG with hide-and-go-seek and dodgeball, and we even found a way to play it while in the bouncy house. I have been partnered with many other children since then, and I continue to play TAG with him and his other buddy for a few minutes each Sunday. I cherish these friendships that I make at Sunday Circle and I love witnessing the breakthrough movements that help the children overcome their discomfort in unfamiliar situations.

Friendship Circle Upper East Side works every day to cultivate friendships between kids, teens and young adults with special needs and dedicated teen and young adult volunteers, providing social and recreational opportunities that are otherwise unavailable to individuals with special needs. They provide every individual with special needs with friendships and inclusion that they deserve, and additional support to their families. Friendship Circle promotes an inclusive community that values all individuals regardless of the challenges they face to create a safe space to help them overcome these challenges and go outside of their comfort zones. Hundreds of friendships have been formed and so many lives have been changed for the better because of this beautiful organization that I am too happy to be a part of.

Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and the quarantine that followed, I experienced firsthand what it is like to be in social isolation and it really opened my eyes to what the special needs community experiences on a daily basis. This initial isolation shifted my perspective and helped me truly understand why the work that Friendship Circle does is so critical. Now more than ever, I’m inspired to continue supporting this special community. Anything you can give to support my walk will be greatly appreciated and will go such a long way. You can donate, join my team, or simply show up on May 15th. The money we raise will go directly to all the amazing programs that the Friendship Circle offers to provide these children with friendships, happiness, and support. Thank you so much!
